Came to Las Cruces to visit my parents...and they took me to Cattle Baron! I don't frequent "prime" steakhouses. Can't afford them. But every once in a while there is a hidden diamond in the rough. A place where you can get a burger for $9, or a pound of prime rib for $26. I had the 14 oz. ribeye and it was absolutely delicious!!!! Cutting through the steak was like a knife through warm butter. This steer was corn fed to the bone. I like it medium rare and they cooked it perfectly - crisp outside and tender middle, with juices dripping out and bathing the sides. I inhaled that slab in minutes. It went down sooo easy. They also have a great salad bar with fresh salads and light desserts. Potato salad, green pea salad, etc...I didn't eat that but my wife was raving about it. I came for the meat, and left with the meat deep in my belly. Been here a few times and the service was always friendly.

Attractive, clean interior. Steaks are fairly good. The salad bar had a lot of delicious choices. Overall, a decent place to eat a steak. The prices are little higher than Texas Roadhouse. The atmosphere is much quieter and attractive than Texas Roadhouse. Therefore it is worth the small premium you pay.

My go-to restaurant whenever I'm in Las Cruces (or, to a lesser extent El Paso or Ruidoso) is the Cattle Baron. I usually order the Ribeye, salad bar, and steak fries. The ribeye is truly a fine cut of beef. Medium rare, and the waiter always waits for me to check the steak. As usual, excellent service with excellent food, with a fairly good view of the sun setting over Las Cruces. The creme brulle was not as well executed as some others that I've had, but the flavor was good, and the coffee was strong. I've been to Morton's. I'll come back to the Cattle Baron. Notes: - You may try to come before the crowd arrives, as some people don't really know how to behave at the salad bar. I'll never look at potato salad the same way again. - The ribeye is a distinctive cut of beef. If you are given something else, send it back. If your steak isn't prepared right, send it back. Errors like these are easily corrected, and if they are not you need to speak with the manager.

Pretty blah all around. Waited a while for our drink order to come. The bottle of wine we got wasn't anything spectacular for the price ($25). I had the NY Strip steak which was also pretty boring. Mashed potatoes tasted like they came from a box. The "Salad Bar" is 1/3 things that actually grow, and 2/3 stuff like pasta salad and potato salad.

The decor is all cowboy. The steak was good, the salad bar was nice and overall the meal was decent.

So we went here after a local told us it was the place. I give it a rating of 3 which could be higher except for a few things The steak a 14 oz rib eye = 5 The salad bar bar overwhelming =3 The waitress nice but had never heard of a corkage fee and a bit SLOW 4 The soup canned at best = 0 Steak fries good but cold =3 Over all a good experience and with a little bit of change could be outstanding. Over all 3.5 rating

When your "claim to fame" is something as simple as a steak, you have to do something special to stand out from the crowd. Cattle Baron is an acceptable place to get that steak, but odds are you probably won't walk out thinking about the next time you want to go back. Not much about the experience sticks with you. Service: 2/5 Very rarely do I take servers to task. Call me a softie, but even when they make mistakes, I don't often make their lives miserable about it. We came in on a Friday night at the tail end of the dinner rush, about 8pm or so. Our server was visibly frazzled and stressed out. She took our order, and then we didn't see her again... until our meal arrived. Now on the surface, this wouldn't seem to be a problem, except for the fact that we ordered an appetizer. She had failed to even put the appetizer order in to the kitchen. Further, the burger my wife ordered was suspiciously missing something... namely anything except some assorted toppings. There was no burger to speak of at all. My meal was intact, but we were short the other entree and the appetizer. She apologized profusely and my wife's burger arrived shortly after. The appetizer didn't show up until we were halfway through our meal. At this point you might be questioning why I didn't just cancel the app or take some other action. As I said, I'm a softie. I know if I were in that position, I would want the benefit of the doubt and a second chance. So I chalk it up to her having a bad night, and life goes on. Food: 3/5 As I said in the opening, when your menu is simple, you need to execute it well. Cattle Baron executes it... passably. My wife's burger was good. The salad bar selections were good. The fish I ordered was good. But that's all any of it was... good. Strangely enough, the most impressive thing we ordered, was the appetizer, which was a spinach artichoke dip. So it turns out it was a good decision for me to not cancel it when it did not arrive when it was supposed to. With all the other errors, we understandably passed on dessert. Overall Impressions: 4/5 The restaurant itself is warm and inviting. The decor goes with the rustic steakhouse vibe they are aiming for. The price and value of the food is acceptable. But as I keep coming back to with this review, Cattle Baron just doesn't do anything extraordinary. And when you're in the steakhouse business, you have to stand out from the "crowd" somehow, and they don't do anything like that for me.

One of the best salad bars I have experienced anywhere. So many great choices, plus fruit, dessert, and soup. Everything we ordered was excellent.; from teriyaki ka-bob to oysters in the half shell (quite a surprise in Las Cruces). I would have given more stars, but our waiter was dazed and confused.

We have been to the Cattle Baron in Ruidoso and Las Cruces many times. If your are a salad bar fan like my wife, then it is a good place to get satisfied. If you prefer steaks then the Cattle Baron is a good place to indulge in that manner. Excellent bread!

Sometimes nothing will do but a steak dinner. I decided to stop at Cattle Baron after walking around Mesilla Mall. I walked in the door and noticed that it was quite dark inside. That's usually a bad sign for a restaurant...it leads me to wonder "What are they trying to hide?". Also, I felt the place was very musty as well. I was seated promptly by my server. He gave me the menu and came back shortly after to take my order. I ordered a medium ribeye steak, and he suggested I try the "special" steak cooked in some oddball flavor of butter. Sounded fine to me, so I accepted his recommendation, and he told me that I could have everything I wanted from the salad bar. Now a word about the salad bar at Cattle Baron. I've heard people talk about the "fantastic" salad bar at this place for years. I've seen reviews where people crowed about how great it is. Here's the truth: it's a smallish salad bar. It's got a pretty good selection for it's size, and is quite decent...but it's far from fantastic. However I put together a pretty decent salad, grabbed some crackers, and proceeded to munch very contentedly until my steak arrived. The tea which I had ordered was not the best...in fact I'd say it was below average and tasted a little old. I hate "flavored" teas, and that's what they had at Cattle Baron that day. Oh well, water is free. The waiter, who was very polite and attentive, arrived with my order. The steak was cooked EXTRA well done, as opposed to my order of medium. Not only that, the steak had an unpleasant burnt flavor from the butter. It had been cooked at too high a heat for too long. In order to eat the thing I had to use ample quantities of Heinz ketchup. That's very bad...steaks should be able to stand on their own merit without backup from ketchup or A1 sauce. The waiter came back and asked how my steak was. I was very frank and told him it was a very poorly cooked steak and also told him the tea wasn't very good either. He apologized, and I responded "no need for you to apologize...you didn't burn the steak." He offered to take the steak back (it was about half eaten), but I wasn't really hungry anymore so I declined. I thanked the server for his attentiveness, and paid for the meal, leaving a generous 20% tip to the server. No need to make him pay for the cook's lack of skill. The quality of service was quite good, the salad bar was good, but the steak and tea were bad. Not inedible, but bad nonetheless. A steakhouse needs to serve good steaks. I don't care how good the service and salad bar were, I can't in good conscience give Cattle Baron any more than 2 stars. Hopefully they will hire better cooks in the future. Also, maybe they should throw out stale tea instead of serving it to customers.

Disappointed. This was no great steakhouse. I had their "famous ribeye" and it was less than half an inch thick. Need I say anymore? The steak wasn't any better than what you'd find at Golden Corral.

After a long day on the road, my boyfriend and I were in the mood for a huge slab of meat so we headed to the Cattle Baron. The food was A-/B+. I had the chicken fried steak, and I can safely say was the best I have ever had. My boyfriend wasn't as satisfied. He had a steak with the shrimp scampi / Pontchartrain topping and he said the steak was fine, but it seemed like the shrimp and Pontchartrain topping was a day old and was trying too hard. He said it would have been great if the shrimp / sauces were fresh. The service was quick and polite. I had two main complaints about this place. It was dark, even by dim steak house standards. Even reading the menu was kind of hard in the light. My second complaint was variety. The salad bar doesn't have a lot of choices if you are going for a traditional salad. There are lots of choices if you want pasta salad, fruit salad, mystery salad... but regular salad, not so much. I thought the menu lacked variety as well. The sides were limited, though tasty. I liked what The Cattle Baron was shooting for with its food and ambiance, but they fall a bit short of the 5 star rating. We have been to the Cattle Baron in Roswell, and they do it just that much better.

Ate here on 4/28. Not too pricey and reasonably priced. However, the rib-eye was not a rib-eye, it was a NY steak! Salad bar is pretty impressive and fresh.

It used to be that Cruces was small enough that there really was only one place you could go for a NICE dinner (and by nice I mean the kind you dress up for) without going to a country club. Cattle Baron was it. They have a good happy hour. Their salad bar is fresh, but unoriginal. Their steaks are decent. But the only folks who are going to confuse this place with five-star dining are those who never stepped out of Cruces into a foodie city. The menu is ordinary. The ambiance is more elevated than most eateries in Cruces, but it does not have a very cohesive or polished interior design. For a date night, I'd recommend Lorenzo's. For a place to take a client, there are now other options (Lemongrass, Double Eagle, Lorenzo's all come to mind). To take out of town guests? Not this place. There's nothing really unique or special about it. In short, for the kind of restaurant it is trying to be (higher end), it falls way too short.

Bottom line: decent food, but the prices are a little high for the quality. For these prices, I expect grissle-free steaks. Sure, I still expect to use a knife to cut it, but grissle? Ugh. Side items are good, but nothing special--or more to the point, none of them were unique. The salad bar is very big--one fo the biggest ones I've seen in a while. I can't say that vegetarians would be thrilled, but at least they won't go hungry. Service was ok. A little slow, but certainly better than "self service" which seems to be the norm these days (why is that average tip has gone up to 20% but average service continues to diminish?). The server we got didn't know much about alcoholic drinks so it took a little back and forth to get the drink order finalized, but she was trying hard. Kind of funny after a hard day of work. If you're dining on someone else's dime, this place is worth going. Finish up the night with the Sweet Indulgence Dessert Cafe and all is good.

Not a pleasant experience. There were four in our party and two ordered sweet potato with our steak. When the plates arrived each of us had about half of a potato. It was one potato that had been cut lengthwise to make two servings. We thought it was odd but started eating and asked ourselves if the menu stated that the side option was half a sweet potato. I asked the server later if this was the normal way that sweet potato was served. She first said yes and then hedged and eventually said that they were running out of sweet potatoes and decided to cut it in half. She offered a different side dish but I was not interested in a different side at this point in my meal. I told her that I would prefer to speak to the manager. The assistant manager was sent to the table with a rehearsed story that they usually get really large potatoes and they cut them in half to serve. We noticed that her story was different from the server's story. She also told us that sweet potatoes would not be ready for 20 minutes which backs up the server's story of running out. She offered a free desert but I opted for the option that was not offered, to take a discount on the meal. It was discounted and we were on our way. As we passed the hostess stand we asked for the name of the manager and found out that it was Steve. This confirmed that we did not get the manager when we asked for the manager. This is a problem on many levels and could have been avoided by sending the server to the table to apologize that they were out of sweet potatoes and offering a different choice up front. But to receive different lies from different people is a major management issue in my mind. They tried to short us on our meal and hoped we would not notice. The more I think about it the angrier I get.

Wow ! After a long days drive, this place hit the spot! Both my wife and my dinner was fantastic. I had the Ribeye cooked medium and to my liking, great cut of beef. My wife had the Rio Pollo chicken dish and she absolutely loved it. She said it was very hot and spicy, but that is how she prefers it. The salad bar was great too. I always seem to get a house Caesar wherever I go and since our meals came with a salad bar, we indulged and thought it was great. If we are ever passing through Las Cruces again, we are definitely stopping here for our meal.

Underwhelming! Menu is basic. They advertise seafood, but only have the usual. Shrimp, salmon, etc. Rice was under cooked! The only positive - was the server Torrie, she tried to make the meal better, but could only do so much. Not recommended!

So this steak house is near a mall they get a lot of the I'm an idiot customers when it comes to steak house dinner rushes. The food is solid I have to agree with one of the other reviews, it's a steak house you should try to stand out but the decor is nice and it's a pretty good menu for land locked NM. Las Cruces is a baby boomer town the baby boomers were buying up most of the property and retiring there so it does also cater to that crowd. My favorite cut is the ribeye I love a large rib eye all marbleized done med. rare. You can get one here when these guys are on their game. I used to live over in the Oregon mountains and enjoyed this place. My service was always good but I usually went in after all of the tourist, mall people etc.

Very good NY strip. Cooked exactly as ordered. The pontchartrain topping was a little salty, but the steak was tender and juicy. Salad bar great with huge variety. Wish they had romaine at the salad bar, but you can order a separate caesar salad. The prices are higher than most places in Las Cruces, but the food is near the quality of Morton's in Chicago. Good value, since I spent $65 for two at Cattle Baron and over $200 at Morton's.

The service is OK at best. The atmosphere is nice and the food is decent. The prices are reasonable if not a little inflated because this is considered one of the "better" places to eat in LC. It's just a blown up TGI Fridays really. The avocado burger is excellent and the bar has a nice ambience with little TVs to watch a game. The salad bar is decent and you can't go wrong with the variety of things they have. The soups have always been the best part to me.

Great, upscale (by LC standards) dining! The service is generally of a higher quality than most restaurants in town. The steaks, which I tend to get often, are of good quality and are always cooked just right. My wife tends to get fish or chicken, and sharing with her, I have enjoyed those meals as well. They also have a great wine selection. If I am in the mood for a good steak with a nice glass of cabernet, I think of Cattle Baron.

This restaurant has nice ambiance. No glaring lights. Service was great. We were there on a fairly busy weekend and at 6:00 in the evening. Steak was great. We added the sauteed mushrooms. Good salad bar. Drinks were not watered down. Very clean restrooms.

This place is down the street from my parents' place. It's priced right and the foods good. They have a large salad bar (for you CA folks - think Claim Jumper-ish). Cuts of meat are good and service is excellent.

Arrived Sunday eve around 8 pm. Only a few customers. Empty bar. Sat in dining room booth. Very sweet server. Appealing (but noticeably dusty) decor was rustic and interesting. Satisfactory salad bar. But VERY sad stuffed prime rib special. That meat was ever so disappointing especially after dining at the Pecan Grill and Brewery the night before. Check their reviews :P. Yum! Go there! This prime rib cut was overdone and overall awful; why do that to a prime rib? I tried to chew it - no good. I had to send it back and it was taken off bill. I dislike having to do that. Very kind server. Not her fault. If looking for steakhouse go to Pecan Grill nearby. They know how to do it all right!

Went for my birthday... I ordered chicken teriyaki... yeah don't order that... my girlfriend ordered a 20$ new York stake.... better off going to Golden corral for a better steak.. not dry at all yumm yumm steak there... but got free fried ice cream which was the only good they brought to the table.. but gotta say the salad bar was fresh and delicious. But it was not worth the bill.

Very busy place! The salad bar was awesome! The server was great, although very busy (she has the whole bar area). We both had steak. Which was very moist and tender

If I could give it less one star I would. This place is terrible. The food is actually gross. Not just bad - it's gross! My wife is vegetarian and was the only one able to finish her meal, a salad. A "steak house" should be able to make a French dip sandwich and chicken fried steak. Right? Nope. And it's expensive. We spent $50 for two lunches and a salad bar for my wife. Stay away from this place.

Driving through town and was looking for a solid meal. Found one here. Ribeye steak cooked perfectly and a salad bar that complemented the meal. Very good service - at the table at the right moments.

It used to be that if you wanted a piece of good prime rib in Las Cruces, it was a "no brainer " You went to Cattle Baron. Things have changed. the parking lot is emptier. Prices have gone up. Quality has gone down. I ordered the rare prime rib - 8 oz. kIt was so tough, I could stand my knife up in the meat! when a manager finally came over, he offered to "make an adjustment " on the bill. instead of removing the item, he took off five dollars. Poor choice and chintzy. We won't return. BTW my wife's catfish was excellent. Good PR trumps bad food. A more generous accommodation for an uneaten piece of prime rib would have been appreciated.

  • Lawrence D.

Meh, the salad bar is good and they do try, but the cuts of meat are just not as good as they try to claim. I had the parmesean pepercorn steak. For $24 you expect less grissel, and while I can understand not seasoning or very light seasoning when your meat is high quality super tender beef, but that's not what they serve. It's not bad there. They have a decent cat fish dinner and going there for the salad bar is worth it... But there is a gap between the quality of food they believe they are serving and what is being served. The person I went with was not impressed, and I would personally rather grab a steak at Texas Roadhouse.

Use to be the place to go for great prime rib. Cut was tough and tasted bland! Waiter kept forgetting our refills. Salad bar always fresh!

In town for the Bataan marathon. Came here on Saturday and then again on Monday. Had the cattle baron sirloin 8 oz on both nights. Steak was inconsistent. Best steak i had in a long time on Saturday night. Medium rare steak cooked to perfection. Nice and juicy. Monday night ordered the same dinner. Steak was a lot thinner cut. Dried and tasteless. Baked potato and salad bar were excellent.

We are here from California. There aren't many good places to eat out here in Las Cruces. I had a wonderful experience, my first time here. Food was good, but the service was GREAT! Our waiter was the friendliest and most attentive. Thank you Roger!

Looked for a good steakhouse after a long day on the road. We found one here. Prime rib was perfect (my wife likes it red raw) and I had the blackened catfish Service from Becca was excellent. One criticism: steak knives are supposed to be sharp; ours were so dull cutting butter would have been difficult. Finally the Manager (Jim Smith I believe) got her a brand new knife and all was well.

The service was great! Our waiter was very personable and mannered. The atmosphere was fairly quiet and inviting. Our food and appetizers came quickly, even though the place was packed. The food was amazing! I got the teriyaki chicken breast with rice and salad bar. The salad bar was really nice. Other people in my family had steak and they said it was just perfect! Not expensive and totally worth a visit!

There must be some kind of persistent plumbing problem, because the area by the entrance seems to regularly smell of sewage. Needless to say, I HOPE it is, in fact, a plumbing problem. Otherwise the smell of faeces might be coming from the food itself.
